A Week in Review

Sometimes the hardest part about blogging (besides turning on the laptop) is coming up with a title. With that said, I am simply calling it what it is, which is a review of my last week.

It was a good week. The weather has gotten had, really, really hot and humid and cicadas have arrived, so it is noisy, very very noisy outside!

Work was busy, I spent my shifts resetting the cosmetic wall, to add in the new products from the make up companies. I have a love/hate relationship with this bi-annual project. This is easier than the winter reset, which I worked on with a team of two others and we started at 4am!

Tara and I have continued to have fun with Pokemon Go. We took two evening drives into Philly, and found lots of new Pokemon driving the streets!

This photo below was taken last Monday when we took a drive to Valley Forge. Our flag has been flying half-staff far to often with all the violence and senseless acts of terror around the world.

Philadelphia is the host for the Democratic Convention. The city is all “dressed up” and ready to be in the spotlight. I want to try and get down one evening after dary to get some photos of some of the landmarks that are being light up for the occasion. Tara was in the city on Sunday night and she said the police presence was very noticable.

There is a new art installation from City Hall to South Street. It looks really amazing, and is called “14 Movements” A Sympony in Color and Words” by Mat Tomezsko. My picture doesn’t really show the true colors as it was evening and lots of other lights. Click here for a great arial view.

We took advantage of Tara and I having some time off together and also took a quick drive to Green Lane in hopes of finding some good Pokemon. Pokemon were not cooperating but I did see many many dragonflies. I love dragonflies. I was not  able to to get too many photos, I was not able to get too close to the waters edge. I like how this one turned out though!

Saturday, Tara and I continued our tradition since 2009 and saw Star Trek Beyond at the Movie Tavern. We have not been to many movies lately, so this was a real treat for me. I enjoy the Movie Tavern experience. The movie and the food did not disappoint!

Sunday, I finally did a grocery shopping. I still HATE grocery shopping, but with the savings I can realize at Aldis on so many things I have not been using on line ordering! I loaded up on fruit and veggies and healthy foods.

Although it was really hot, I did cook a nice dinner with a couple recipes I found.

Mexican Chicken and Cauli-Rice. They were inspired by this recipe, but I made a few alterations. It was really good. I also made Blueberry Crisp with oatmeal and pecans in the “crisp”. I made sure to keep it healthy and did not add much additional sweetner. It was yummy!

Monday is here, and it is the last day of my four day break from work. I was up very early. We had a thunderstorm that woke me up, and I never really went back to sleep. Trying to make the most of the day! Maybe Tara and I will head out on an adventure once she gets up! If not I have plenty of projects here I could get into!

Thanks for stopping by.

I have been “good” and have not watched any of them yet this year!

Do you have a favorite movie?

Random Tuesday Thoughts

My heart goes out to all those impacted by the horrific tornado in Moore, Oklahoma. I can not imagine. I know I’ve been going through some family “stuff” here, but it is dwarfed in comparison to what all of those people will be dealing with for days, weeks, months to come. Mother Nature has no mercy.

Joining in with Stacey at “Stacey Uncorked” for Random Tuesday Thoughts! Thankfully she’s back up and running after a couple of very frustrating days last week with her laptop! Cloning is bad, very very bad!
Stacy

It seems as if spring has finally arrived. We’ve had some pretty nice days lately, as well as some rain. It looks like Memorial Day here will be very nice. We have a ceremony and a parade to attend, and a couple years it has been so hot it was uncomfortable for us, not to mention all those in the parade!

I’ve been off work for a couple days. These days have been the most relaxed that I have been in some time. There is still some “anxiety” under the surface, as there are still some unanswered questions, and details that need working out, but I am not living every moment in a heightened state of anxiousness.  Teenagers are tough!

Tara and I went to see Star Trek Into Darkness on Sunday.

photo (3)

I had won a contest at work and the prize was a $25.00 gift card of my choice. I choose a movie gift card with just this movie in mind!

photo (4)

The movie was GREAT. The “first” Star Trek movie back in 2009 was the one movie of all time that I saw the most often in the theater. FIVE TIMES. I could have sat through this one several more times on Sunday. I do not know what it is about these movies that make me love them so much. Oh wait, maybe it’s Chris Pine’s beautiful eyes?

We went to a new theater to us, inOaks, Pa,  and on the way in we say this… it reminds me of the globe that was at the World’s Fair in NYC. (Yes, I am old and I was there!)

Yesterday (Monday) my mother and I spent time at our storage unit. When I moved back from FL, we combined two households, and Mom already had stuff in storage of her own. I downsized from a house with a garage and two extra rooms. At the time Tara was still into many of her toys, and while she parted with a great deal, she was obviously not ready to part with everything. I am just as guilty. There were several boxes that were never really even unpacked. Many Disney keepsakes, stuff for scrapbooking projects (who am I kidding?) and much more. I was able to get rid of a huge back of trash, and have sorted through some things to get rid of. Tara and I are headed over today for her to take a look at things. Mom’s church is having a Flea Market in a few weeks, maybe we can make some money off the stuff!

I’m working on a Memorial Day blogging project. I have shared the past two days letters that my brother Robin sent home from Vietnam. Robin was killed in Vietnam. I am finding it an interesting project. As I read and transcribe the letters to my blog, I find things I want to know more about. If you get a chance, check out my Letters from Robin series.

Day 5 – Favorite Quote

I love this one (image from Google Images)

“Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it.”

Virtual Girls Night Out

Ann’s got a Virtual Party going on over at her place. Some great Panic! at the Disco music (I’ve actually seen them in concert) and some cocktails. I’m fashionably late to the party. I have a good excuse I was having a “movie night” with my teen. We watched Stephen King’s Langoliers, it was a very good movie. We didn’t argue once, well not until after the movie when I reminded her that she PINKY promised to clean her room!
More Panic! at the Disco (Brendan Urie of this group is on of Tara’s “crushes”),this song makes me SMILE!

30 Days About Me
I’m participating in 30 Days about Me, each day Toni has given us a prompt to blog about in order to get to know more about our fellow bloggers! It is fun reading everyones responses. I might not get back to folks who stop by until later today, work bekons me this morning!

Day 2- Favorite Movie

Picking my favorite movie is almost as hard as picking my favorite song. I watch movies to be entertained, not to find a deeper meaning or some hidden message. I don’t want to have to think too hard to “get it”. I like almost all types of movies. Not a big fan of anything too bloody or scary.

The first movie that will always come to mind when asked this question for me is The Wizard of Oz. Growing up, before VCRs, DVDs, Blu-Ray, On-Demand and streaming video, The Wizard of Oz played on network TV once a year. That was always a special night in our house. As much as I loved the movie, those darned FLYING MONKEYS always scared the hell out of me.  I love the Wizard of Oz scene in the Great Movie Ride at Disney Hollywood Studios.

I also have a love for the Pirates of the Caribbean Movies. I ♥ Johnny Depp and the Capt Jack character.  Again, another favorite ride of mine at Magic Kingdom is Pirates of the Caribbean ride. This is as close as I will ever get to Capt Jack or Johnny Depp.  This was an actor, playing the actor who plays Capt Jack at Magic Kingdom. (He was pretty good!)

So, what movie you ask do I love that doesn’t have a Disney connection?

My all time favorite comedy has to be “Young Frankenstein”.  I saw it the first time on a plane over the Atlantic flying to Germany in 1974.

Wordless Wednesdsay

Since summer is quickly coming to an end, I find myself comparing to last year this same time, and life has changed so very much. Some good changes, some bad changes. Some inevitable changes.  Time marches on, my girl is growing up!

Aliens Don’t Eat Quiche on their Birthday

(I went to a small blogging seminar hosted by our local paper the other evening, and it was mentioned that your post title is very important in SEO (search engine optimization).  I fail at catchy titles, so bear with me if mine are totally corny!  This one isn’t going to win me any prizes!)

Today was a TOTALLY lazy Saturday.  I had the day off, and we had no plans.  I love a day like this from time to time.  I love when I am not Tara’s source of entertainment (or of late, I’m more just the mode of transportation).

Speaking of driving, I took Tara and a group of friends to the movies last night.  They saw Transformers, while I chose to be in a different theater on the other side of the building, and watched Super 8.  It was a great, made me jump in my seat, movie.  This is a JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg movie at it’s finest in my opinion!

Tara is off for the night at a friends house, and it is so very quiet around here.  I should use the time and be productive, as I did very little today.

As for the rest of the weekend, no plans right now.  I’m guessing I should probably see if there are fireworks around on Monday, since I’d have to go alone tonight (but is that really a bad thing?)  I work Sunday evening. Monday, the 4th of July, is not only America’s birthday, but also my mother’s 87th birthday.  We usually keep the celebration of both low key these days.  I will find a nice meal to prepare and I’m thinking an angel food cake, with fresh berries will be the dessert.  A light and patriotic colored dessert!  My brother and his family sent Mom another beautiful arrangement of flowers – Teleflora’s Sunrise Sunset arrangement.  I think of all that she has received over the years this is my favorite.  I love the bright colors, and gerberas are my favorite.  It was arranged by Lansdale Florist.  It looks like the cube “vases” are the “in” thing right now!

I  caught up on some DVRd shows, and watched “The Birdcage” with Nathan Lane and Robin Williams OnDemand.  I love that movie!

I needed to find something to make for dinner. Looking in the “fridge”, I found a package of TransOcean Crab Classic.  Before you go calling it ‘fake crab’, surimi seafood is a blend of wild caught Pollock and King Crab Meat.  It is a great source of Omega-3.  It gets the thumbs up from the American Heart Association and the Marine Stewardship Council.  We have a great dip we make using it, however, that was not going to cut it for dinner.  When I went to the website, and clicked on the Lite and Healthy recipe link, this one quickly caught my eye, as we had some left over broccoli in the fridge!  There are quite a few others I would like to try. There’s even a printable $1 coupon!

This dish is so easy, I had only the pie plate, two measuring cups and a fork to clean up from the preparation.  From the time I looked up the recipe to the time it was on the table was about 45 minutes!

Crustless Crab Classic & Broccoli Quiche
INGREDIENTS
4 oz. Crab Classic Flake Style
4 eggs
1 cup 2% milk
1 1/2 cups grated reduced fat cheese (Swiss or cheddar)
1/2 cup Heart Smart Bisquick
2 cups chopped broccoli (frozen, thawed)
1 small onion diced
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
DIRECTIONS

Heat oven to 400°F. Sprinkle broccoli, 1 cup of the cheese, Crab Classic Flakes and onion into a greased 9″ pie plate.

In a bowl, combine Heart Smart Bisquick mix, milk, salt, pepper and eggs until blended. Pour this mixture over ingredients in pie plate.

Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake 1 to 2 minutes longer or just until cheese is melted. Cool 5 minutes.

Makes 8 servings (We actually had what would be considered two servings for our meal, as I served it only with a side of Mandarin Oranges).

Holy Hoagie

Good morning!  I woke up with a bit of a headache, and realized I had not had my “daily grind” yesterday, no coffee, uh oh!  I promptly made myself a cup and took a couple Migraine Relief pain killers, and I’m all good now,

i just saw on the news that Wawa is sponsoring the building of a 4 1/2 ton hoagie at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia today (1/2 Italian, 1/2 Turkey).  It is all part of Wawa Welcome America.  Hats off to Wawa for honoring our soldiers and hometown heroes.  Wawa is also helping the community by sending 5,000 hoagies to the Philabunance Food Bank!  I think if i weren’t working, I would try and head downtown today!

Who can believe that it is almost the end of June?  I can’t.  Only 179 shopping days until Christmas!  In the retail world it is almost time for back to school supplies!

This evening you will find me transporting the teens to Regal (Tara and her friends) to see Transformers 3.  I may take advantage of a free ticket that I have and go see Bridesmaids while I am there.  I’m not really interested in seeing T3 and I can’t use my free ticket to see it anyway!  (updated – we didn’t go until Friday and I saw Super 8 which was totally awesome)

I am still doing well on my ‘healthy eating’ challenge.  The challenge is with myself, and I am proud to say 16 days into it, I am winning.  It is said that it takes 21 days to make things a habit, so I am well on my way.  Planning for the times I am out of the house, at work, errands, outings is the biggest key for me!  The Reeses Peanut Butter cups, etc that sit on my counter all day long have not tempted me even once this week. I ♥ SparkPeople

I made a really simple soup to take for lunch this week, I found several versions on the Spark Recipe site.

Five Ingredient Soup
1 can refried beans
1 can black beans (drained)
1 can corn (drained)
1 can diced tomatoes (Rotelles with chilies gives it a little kick)
1 can chicken broth (I used beef, that’s what I had opened)
Mix them all together in a pot, heat until refried beans are no longer thick and soup is hot.

I was able to get 5 generous 1 cup servings out of this. Approx 115 calories, 1 gm of fat, 6 gm of fiber and 7 gms of protein.  I could vary depending on the specific brands you use and the type of refried beans.

The church bells are chiming 7am, and my friend the cardinal is singing his heart out, so I think it is time for me to say good bye for today!

Make it a great day!

Sorry no pics.  The most interesting thing I took a picture of yesterday way my green jello at lunch!  Only 10 calories!

Twenty five years ago today, my dad passed away.  He’s been gone for almost 1/2 of my life.  There are so many situations when I wish he was here to give me advice.  I miss him so very much.

Tara and I had a quiet NYE.  I got home from work around 4:30, we had a quick dinner, nothing fancy, and then we headed out to the movies.  I had been wanting to see The Tourist, so this was the pick for the night.  It was an enjoyable movie.  I love Johnny Depp!

After we got home we went up and spent the rest of the evening with our neighbor Vivian and her family.  I had a glass of wine, and some champagne at midnight.  We had a nice time visiting, my mom even joined us to ring in the New Year.

New Year’s Day had Tara and I making a quick trip to King of Prussia Mall.  I had to exchange the phone case I bought myself for Christmas, and Tara wanted to spend some of my money in her favorite store – Hot Topic.  I then picked up a rotissierie chicken for a quick lunch, as I had to go into work at 4pm.  I was fortunate that this holiday season I had only to work New Year’s Day as my holiday since the store was open Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Today was SUPPOSED to be my day of “rest”.  To stay at home, go no where, and do just what I wanted too.  Well, that didn’t last long.  I wound up taking Tara and her friends to the mall and picking them back up.  It really isn’t that far, or even really a big deal, but I was so annoyed that she did not stick to agreement.  I love how most of the time no other parents are available to be the taxi!

Although I did not miss not having to get Tara up for school, I am glad that she goes back tomorrow.   I am glad that I am not scheduled to work until Tuesday, so I will have a day to myself to get re-centered/re-grouped!

Thanks A-Latte for stopping by!

Random Tuesday Thoughts – Winter Wonderland

It’s Monday evening, trying to get in a little randomization before my head hits the pillow.  Back to work tomorrow for the first time since Friday.  I was supposed to work Sunday evening, but I had a killer headache all day and for the first time in almost a year called out sick. It snowed, so I am pretty sure the store was not busy.  I would have been worthless had I gone!

I changed my blog design, I’m done with red and green and Christmas… let’s move on to the New Year.  I’m sure in the next week or so Valentine’s Day will start popping up in the retail world.  One of these days I’m going to get my blog done professionally!

RTT is hosted by Keely, the UnMom!  I’m hoping shedding some of this randomness helps my memory which sucks lately.
randomtuesday
We got “just enough” snow to make it pretty, but not enough to paralyze things.  I know some areas not too far away got hit much harder then us.

Tara and I were out running a couple errands today when I realized I needed air in one of my tires… now the “need air in one of your tires” light has been on in my car for some time now, but they all looked fine to me, and it does not tell you which one!  It took me THREE stops to find a air machine, and today, I actually had $1.00 in quarters… come on now, 1 minute of air, or the electricity used to run the compressor can’t possibly cost $1.00.   Anyway, back to the point of this, as we pulled into the last gas station, Tara said to me “what is that”, as I looked up it was a full fledged PHONE BOOTH….she had never remembered seeing an actual phone booth before, except for the red ones in the “UK” at Epcot.  I wanted to take a picture, but another car drove up and I was apparently in their way, so I did not get one.  It was really quite funny because the doors were open and it was full of snow…. would have taken some effort to make a call if you needed to!

So, how was your Christmas?  Ours was good.  Tara thinks it was AWESOME.. hmm, that’s because she got just about everything she wanted, and more.  I think I spent more this Christmas than in quite a few years.  She got an electric keyboard (musical, not computer), tickets to the Jingle Ball we attended earlier in the month, posters, CDs, T-shirts, gift cards, and more.  I really was not on my toes and didn’t really get pictures of anything.  She is at that stage where her hair has to be PERFECT to be photographed, and it was NOT at  8am on Christmas morning.

What did I get you ask?  Well, anyone want to go out for coffee?  I got $50 worth of coffee gift cards – $25 for Dunkin Donuts and $25 for Starbucks from my sister. To top it off, I had just “reloaded” my Starbucks card with $20… I like coffee, but you can’t tell me there was not some other gift card on that gift card rack that spoke my name.  (I requested BEST BUY, and my awesome computer guru nephew came through with that!)  I do appreciate the gifts… but $50 worth of coffee??????

My mother gave me Christmas ornaments… we get one Hallmark one from her each year, and she has also been getting me a Lenox moose ornament for several years.  They are really cute, but I have told her she does not need to spend the money.  My sister and I both got 2009 Yorkie ornaments that she forgot about last year.  My sister still had her Yorkie – Thor, but we had to leave our Yorkie – Maia – behind when we left Florida.  She also picked up a gift card from the spa I go to from Tara….

I also got a cell phone case and gloves that I can wear and use my iPhone.  They are awesome.  Both things I bought for myself and my mother wrapped them for under the tree.  The gloves are IsoToner SmarTouch gloves, I got them at Wal-Mart for only $12.00.  I love them.  I know you should not text, etc while driving, which I don’t do, but there are times when I need to find something or text someone and I will do it while at a traffic light or parked.

My blingy iPhone Case… sometimes a girl just needs bling!

I bought my mother a CD/cassette/turntable player, that was not overly expensive, and her comment was “I wish you hadn’t” – meaning she thinks I spent too much…. she asked for a CD player… this was a good deal….. sometimes I just want to forget about gifts for anyone over the age of 18 in our family!!!

Iggy dropped off an unexpected and yummy box of goodies!  I wasn’t here when he delivered them though…. At least I have some yummy chocolate to enjoy with my coffee!  The unexpected gifts are always the best.  Thanks again Iggy!  I will find a way to repay (and surprise you!)

I saw two movies this week
1) Little Fockers with my sister and niece.  It was funny, and what a deal.  I found out that Franks Theaters have $5.00 admission for the first show times of the day!  I’m going to start going to more movies ALONE on my days off for that price!
2) Tara and I have a tradition of seeing a movie on Christmas Day.  This year we chose Black Swan.  Tara had read a tweet from Adam Lambert that he thought the movie was amazing, so she wanted to see it.  Natalie Portman was excellent.  There were some disturbing scenes.  If you haven’t seen the movie or heard about it this sums it up…,Black Swan is about a demented, sexually repressed ballerina who craves the spotlight but can’t handle the pressure.  (I would not recommend this for young teens — but I feel as long as I am seeing it with Tara, I can address any questions…. luckily there were none… she may have just closed her eyes!)

I always feel like I have so much more randomness when I start…. my mind has been mush the past few days.  I am glad the holidays are over, maybe it won’t be so bad.  It was really a stressful time, but there were just enough extra things to think about that my mind could not keep up!

I hope you have a wonderful New Year’s Eve/Day what ever you have planned.  I hope to go up and socialize with my neighbor’s on NYE… they are having some people over.  We are both always coming and going, and never seem to have time for much more than a quick hello!

Join in on the Tuesday Train…. a great way to get new followers.  I promise I will be visiting when I get home this evening!

Friday Fragments & Give Me Your Best Shot

Mrs 4444 hosts Friday Fragments each week for us to get all the “stuff” out of our heads that we’ve been collecting.
Mommy's Idea

TGIF – I can say that this week ’cause I am OFF on Saturday!

Here on the home front not too much new and or exciting.  We had a break in the heat and dryness this week, with a couple days of rain and cooler temps, however, they are climbing back up!

I spent some time on Wednesday looking at old slides. I dug the slide projector (remember those things?) out of storage and reminisced away.  I dropped off a bunch to have prints made and saved to a CD, I want to preserve the memories before they fade away.  The photos were taken by my Dad, and document many weekend camping trips, vacations, and family events.

I worked through the weekend, and had Tues-Thurs off.  I like the mid week “weekend”, but it is nice from time to time to have a whole weekend day off…. for me that will be this Saturday and then again in two weeks.  Not sure what I will be doing with this Saturday, Tara might have plans with her friends…. so I might have some time to myself or maybe lunch with my Mom.  Two weeks from now we will be headed to Ocean City NJ, just for a day, to visit with my brother who will be in from Texas.  I can’t wait to smell the ocean air!

So who watches Big Brother?  Don’t be embarrassed… it is one of the things that Tara and I look forward to each July, and it’s been even more fun this year with Tara’s friends watching with us (they never watched before!)  None of us were happy about who was evicted last night or even worse the player who won Head of Household!  I think they have some great players this season…. these two really make the show worthwhile…(young and hot…. LOL)  I have a feeling one of these might be in trouble this next week though!

Our “technology challengement” (how do you like that new word?) has continued, and the screen on Tara’s Nikon Coolpix cracked, so it was delivered to the nice British Geek Squad guy.  I don’t think that it is a good thing when the Geek Squad knows you by name!!!!  I am so thankful I spent the extra dollars on service plans….$30 at the time of purchase, means free repair (or even possibly a new camera) instead of me having to come up with money for a new camera.  The breakage was not really Tara’s fault…. but I think she has learned from the laptop and camera that she needs to keep her “stuff” in safer places!

I took Tara, her two friends and the two great nephews to Franks Theater on Tuesday to see a free showing of “Aliens in the Attic”.  Somehow Tara and I had missed that one.  It was a cute movie, but I have to admit I fell asleep near the end… chilly theaters, and tired Martha do not mix!  I am not sure how people with multiple children do it… I always felt like I was ignoring someone with five kids in tow.

After the movie, on the way home the girls wanted to stop off at the park… I waited in the car while the went on the swings… the girls were all really tired and so was I, they had spent the night at our house the night before, and wanted waffles for breakfast (I make them not just toast the frozen kind….) so they had to get up pretty early!  I thought this was a pretty good “capture” with my IPhone, through the windshield… I got all three of them at different positions in swinging!

Give me your best shot at Better in Bulk

Lollie @ Better in Bulk hosts Give Me Your Best Shot each Friday…. Some might have seen one of these pics on Facebook already, but these are my favorites of the week.  Tara and her friend Sidney all dressed up to go to a birthday party… for a FOUR year old!  The got these dresses at the Goodwill!  Tara’s usual style is jeans or shorts… so this “dressing up” is a big step!  I LOVE Sidney’s dress… $70 dress (tag still on) for $5!!!!  (I also found out this week that Sidney’s dad is a photographer…. Daniel Glen Photography, I love his work.

My morning has started off well, pool is cleaned, I am showered, load of laundry started…. now to get dressed, and head out to do a little Walmart shopping…. say what you might if you are not a fan, but they have the BEST pet supply prices in town, and I need some cheap shorts for around the pool…. mine are all marked by chlorine boo boos!
A cup of coffee shared with a friend is happiness!
