In Pursuit of Happiness

I am generally a happy person with a positive attitude.

Is my life perfect? Hell no! My family has it’s issues, just like most families. There are things I worry about privately.

I wake up every morning with a few aches and pains. By the amount of over the counter pain reliever we sell at work, I think most people do!

I believe that every day I wake up is a good day! Really, that is one step in the right direction!

If I am having a bad day, I admit it. I announce to those around me that I am CRANKY, and I apologize in advance for any snarkiness!  I had a day like that this week. I was not feeling great physically, and I was letting things that happened around me to make me not feel so great mentally! It was a really long day!

I got home and had a LONG talk with myself!

I like to spend time with people who are happy and have a positive attitude, but sometimes we have NO choice but to be around people who have the ability to bring us down. I think we all have one or two (or more), people in our workplace, school or even family!

You know “that” person that I am talking about, the one that you have learned to not ask “How are you today?”, because you will get a long list of ailments, or complaints. They choose to be NEGATIVE.

I can’t really help how those people are feeling, but I can CONTROL how I let them make me feel!

There are times when I wish I could give them subliminal messages about happiness and positive attitude.

Here are some messages I would share with them if I could!

Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.
Dalai Lama

It is very important to generate a good attitude, a good heart, as much as possible. From this, happiness in both the short term and the long term for both yourself and others will come.
 Dalai Lama

Truth is a deep kindness that teaches us to be content in our everyday life and share with the people the same happiness.
Khalil Gibran

Happiness depends upon ourselves.

Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.
Helen Keller

Passing Time

I am so excited that Toni has started up Quotable Sunday again! Time slipped by me last weekend, and I didn’t get a chance to post. In fact, time has seemed to slip by terribly fast in recently. Do you realize there are only ELEVEN weeks left in 2011?

My days (even weekends) generally start with the dog and cat getting me up for breakfast around 5am (lately I’ve already been awake, laying in bed, trying to get back to sleep, thank goodness for Twitter pals who are suffer from insomnia as well).

On school/work days we are out of the house by 7:30.  Most days after school/work there is some errand running to do. Then dinner, clean up, and homework.

Many days come to an end and I feel I have accomplished nothing on my TO DO list. Those things that aren’t required to be done every day!

I’ve had some blog and photography projects in my head for weeks now, and I can’t seem to find the uninterrupted time to get them from my brain to the computer. Not to mention organizing around the house. With a small living space, and limited storage, purging and organizing need to be weekly tasks!

Depending on my schedule I generally work at least one shift per weekend. I don’t mind one shift too much, it gives me a week day off to get things done without also having to bide by Tara’s wishes.

Maybe it is not so much that I manage my time poorly, but my priorities are FUN first, cleaning second!  Some days though, I’m just too TIRED even for FUN!

I thought I would share some quotes about TIME today!

I must govern the clock, not be governed by it.
Golda Meir

People who cannot find time for recreation are obliged sooner or later to find time for illness.  John Wanamaker

The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of 60 minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is.  C. S. Lewis

Lost time is never found again.  Benjamin Franklin

Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.
Carl Sandburg

Now, I think I will use my Sunday morning time wisely, do a load of laundry and figure out something for dinner before I have to do some running with Tara, then head into work at 4pm. Thank goodness tomorrow and Wednesdays are days off this week!

Thanks a-LATTE for stopping by!

Quotable Sunday – George Washington

So, I haven’t blogged since Thursday, the days just seem to fly by anymore!
Quotable Sunday is hosted by Toni @ A Daily Dose of Toni.  The “rules” are simple, post some of your favorite quotes, or about a topic that is on your mind, then head on over to Toni’s and link up to her post.  Take some time to visit others posts as well.  (Something I have to admit I have not been good at the past couple of weeks.  Hopefully today, after spending some time with my daughter, I will have some downtime to myself!)
Mothers Day Gift Ideas
Today, I am sharing quotes from George Washington in honor of his birthday (and mine tomorrow!)

George  Washington (1732-1799)- First President of the United States.  If you want to know more about George Washington, here are some rare facts and curious truths. (photo taken by me at the Washington Memorial Chapel, Valley Forge)

Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation for ’tis better to be alone than in bad company.
Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation.

Few men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder.
It’s wonderful what we can do if we’re always doing.
Labor to keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire called conscience.
Our cause is noble; it is the cause of mankind!
It is better to offer no excuse than a bad one.
I hope I shall possess firmness and virture enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.

Quotable Sunday – Love

What else to share quotes about today but LOVE.  I choose quotes from movies.

Love actually is all around us.

— Hugh Grant, Love Actually

“La vita e bella; la vita e amore. — Life is beautiful; life is love.”
from the movie “Life Is Beautiful”

“The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more; that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds.”
from the The Notebook

If you love someone you say it, you say it right then, out loud. Otherwise the moment just…
passes you by…
-My Best friend’s Wedding

A dream is a wish your heart makes. Cinderella

Hearts will be practical only when they are made unbreakable.

— The Wizard of Oz

Quotable Sunday – Living in the Present

Quotable Sunday is hosted by Toni at A Daily Dose of Toni.  It is easy to play along, post a few of your favorite quotes, head on over to Toni’s and link up, and then take some time to visit others who have shared.  It is one of my favorites posts each week to write!

Who would have thought, being outside of the house for approximately 21 extra hours a week would make such an impact on what I am able to do when I am at home.  I am still trying to adjust to working, and not finding as much time (or is it energy) to blog!  When I used to be able to sit up until 1am or 2am on the laptop, now when I come home, to unwind, I just want to get off my feet and watch a little TV.  The days I work, I am usually scheduled 4pm-10:30pm.  Luckily it takes 6 (or less) minutes to get to and from the store!

Many times in my life I have made major decisions, and some time down the road I wondered “what if” I had chosen a different path.  I think this is human nature.  However, I think some people really get caught up in the what ifs and it keeps them from enjoying the day right in front of them.  I think it is important to embrace the paths we have chosen, keep moving forward, and live for the day.

During my career, I participated in many seminars on career planning, time management, and goal setting.  I always disliked when they would put the inevitable exercise in front of us, asking us to lay out short term and long term goals.  I never was much of a planner, I “flew by the seat of my pants”, and most times would just make things up!   Yes, this has gotten me into trouble from time to time, but I also have found when I personally plan too far in advance, life throws me a curve ball!  I have met people who have “life plans” and when something in that plan does not go as anticipated, they are blown of course, and even if that change is a good thing, they are never able to see it that way.

So for today, and every day, I will continue to embrace the day right in front of me, and live it to the fullest!

The time is now, the place is here. Stay in the present. You can do nothing to change the past, and the future will never come exactly as you plan or hope for.
Dan Millman
The present is the ever moving shadow that divides yesterday from tomorrow. In that lies hope.
Frank Lloyd Wright, The Living City
Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

Quotable Sunday – Laughter

Mothers Day Gift Ideas

Tara and I went to the movies yesterday, the first of the new year.  Our choice for the day – Tooth Fairy with Dwayne Johnson, Ashley Judd, Julie Andrews and a few very funny moments with Billy Crystal.

We both enjoyed the movie, and the laughter throughout the theater would confirm that at the very least, it was funny!  I love to see  Dwayne Johnson (his smile and his pecs) on the big screen!

Tara and I go to movies to be entertained.  If we go to a comedy and it makes us laugh, it gets a thumbs up. It does not have to be a critiques choice or award winning!  Regal theaters have great pretzel bites, so that’s a plus too!

Derek “The Tooth” Thompson is a washed up pro hockey player, who is sentenced to Tooth Fairy duty for discouraging dreams of children, in particular his girlfriends daughter.
So, since we had some good laughs, I thought I would share quotes about laughter!
The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.  ~e.e. cummings
What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul.  ~Yiddish Proverb
A laugh is a smile that bursts.  ~Mary H. Waldrip
I’ve always thought that a big laugh is a really loud noise from the soul saying, “Ain’t that the truth.”  ~Quincy Jones
Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live.  – Unknown
Earth laughs in flowers – Ralph Waldo Emerson

The person who knows how to laugh at himself will never cease to be amused.
— Shirley MacLaine
I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose.  ~Woody Allen

I hope your today is filled with SMILES and LAUGHTER!

Quotable Sunday – Keep it Simple!

Happy New Year all my Quotable Sunday friends and faithful readers. It is a cold and blustery Sunday morning. It is 15°F, feeling like 1°F with the wind chill!
Mothers Day Gift Ideas

Quotable Sunday is hosted by Toni @A Daily Dose of Toni.  Head over to check her out, and why you are at it, why don’t you share some words of wisdom for the day!  It’s easy!  One of my favorite posts each and every week!

Did you pick a “word of the year”?  Seems like “everyone” is doing it.  I’ve run across it on several blogs, but my favorites are my friends Caroline and Yaya.  Last year my word was Change, and life sure did.  Those changes have prompted me that for 2010 my word is…..

or to use a phrase – “Keep it Simple”!

Kasper’s are Keeping in Simple in 2010!

Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. ~Albert Einstein

Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated. ~Confucius

Simplicity is making the journey of this life with just baggage enough. ~Author Unknown I think this one if my favorite. We can’t make it through life with no baggage, it is inevitable with our life experiences that there will be some, our baggage is what helps build our character, but excess baggage is what holds us back. We carry too much with us, and there is no room for picking up new “souvenirs” along the way.

Frugality is one of the most beautiful and joyful words in the English language, and yet one that we are culturally cut off from understanding and enjoying. The consumption society has made us feel that happiness lies in having things, and has failed to teach us the happiness of not having things. ~Elise Boulding   Frugal until recently in my mind was a negative word, but now I understand it as being something positive in our life. It’s taken me 51 years to really understand that it is not MY STUFF that defines me.

To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter… to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird’s nest or a wildflower in spring – these are some of the rewards of the simple life. ~John Burroughs

Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. ~William Morris Think about this one!

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. ~Leonardo DaVinci

If you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted in pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days. ~Annie Dillard, “Seeing,” Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, 1974 This quote is not so much beautiful, but think about it, how many times do you walk right over a penny, because, it’s just a penny, and not worthy your time or effort to bend down to pick it up?  I know I had a heads down penny on our front step for weeks, but if a penny is heads up, we pick it up!  Heads down was just asking for trouble!

Be content with what you have, rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you. ~Lao Tzu

We don’t need to increase our goods nearly as much as we need to scale down our wants. Not wanting something is as good as possessing it. ~Donald Horban

Reduce the complexity of life by eliminating the needless wants of life, and the labors of life reduce themselves. ~Edwin Way Teale  Another one to really think about, the less “stuff” we have, the less time it takes to keep it in order!  I think about how over indulged Tara has been, and when we lived in FL, it took me so much time trying to keep her stuff in order.  Since moving we have less “on site storage” for our stuff, and we no longer deal with clutter issues.  I am at the point where after 6 mos, I feel I can now go to storage and re-visit those things still packed, and rid myself of more “stuff”.  The clutter was exhausting. It is that way with our internal clutter too!

Quotable Sunday – Good bye 2009, Hello 2010

Mothers Day Gift Ideas

Quotable Sunday is brought to you by Toni, from A Daily Dose of Toni – why don’t you join us?

This is the last Sunday of 2009, the last Quotable Sunday of the year.  I am looking forward to 2010.  I guess I’m liking the multiples of “10”?  I have enjoyed participating in Quotable Sunday, and I would like to say thank you to our gracious hostess Toni, for creating this place for us to share our favorite words!

A new year is unfolding – like a blossom with petals curled tightly concealing the beauty within. ~ Unknown
Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man.  ~Benjamin Franklin
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
~Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1850
People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas.  ~Author Unknown
One resolution I have made, and try always to keep, is this:  To rise above the little things.  ~John Burroughs
He who breaks a resolution is a weakling; He who makes one is a fool. ~F.M. Knowles

New Years Toasts
A New Years toast to love and laughter
and happily ever after

A health to you, a wealth to you,
And the best that life can give to you.

Dance as if no one were watching, sing as if no one were listening
and live every day as if it were your last.

We’ve Holidays and happy days,
and memory days galore
And when we’ve toasted every one,
I offer just one more
So let us lift our glasses high,
and drink a silent toast
To the day, deep buried in each heart
that each one loves the most

Here’s wishing you more happiness
Than all my words can tell,
Not just alone for New Years Eve
But for all the year as well.

Here’s to the days of good will,
cold weather, and warm hearts.
