Saturday 9 – A Wee Bit of Irish

Ireland is where strange tales begin & happy endings are possible.
Charles Haughey

1) This song Unicorn, was recorded by The Irish Rovers. While it’s said that on St. Patrick’s Day everyone is Irish, can you honestly claim Irish heritage?
I believe there is a wee bit of Irish in my blood. My Mom had a DNA test done for geneology, and his is showing about 20%, Irish and English heritage.

2) According to the 2000 Census, Massachusetts is the state with the largest percentage of residents of Irish descent. Have you ever been to The Bay State?  I have driven through MA, but I don’t think I have ever spent anytime in the state visiting. One of the only NE states I have not vacationed in.

3) Other than St. Patrick, what is Ireland famous for?  The Blarney Stone, four leaf clovers.

4) St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated the world over. They even watch marching bands and wave Irish flags on St. Patrick’s Day in Moscow. Does your town have a St. Patrick’s Day parade? My town does not, but Philadelphia, the closest city does have a parade.

5) “The wearing o’ the green” is one way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Will you wear something green in honor of the day? I don’t really own very much green and I have to work tomorrow. There is nothing in my work wardrobe that is green. I might polish my nails green though!

6) Have you ever had green beer? Not in a long time, but I remember a couple St Patrick’s Day when I was in college when we had huge parties with kegs of green beer!

7) Have you ever ordered a Shamrock Shake at McDonald’s? Yes. I had one just the other day and will probably get one to celebrate the day tomorrow since I won’t be drinking any green beer. I remember being in the hospital many years ago on St. Patrick’s Day and a friend brought me a shake, so they have always been a tradition.

8) A four-leaf clover is considered good luck. Do you have a lucky charm? I don’t really have anyone thing that I consider a lucky charm. My daughter got her first tattoo a few weeks ago and it is a small four leaf clover on her inner wrist.

9) Speaking of Lucky Charms, they are magically delicious.  What brand of cereal is in your kitchen right now? We have Blueberry Mini Wheats, Cheerios, Kashi, Reeses cereal, All Bran….

Check out other Saturday 9er’s.

Love and Irish Coffees.

Summer Saturday

I know it’s not summer yet, but it is really starting to feel like it. Not just the weather, but just that summer “feeling”!

Working today, working tomorrow, Monday off!

Saturday 9: Sweet Caroline

The idea for this came from Harriet, who suggested the baseball theme.
1) “Sweet Caroline” has been sung during every Boston Red Sox home game since the 1990s. (Click here to watch Neil Diamond lead the fans in the first game after April’s bombing.) Sure, I loved Neil Diamond and was a huge fan of his in my teens?

2) Do you have a favorite major league baseball team? Philadelphia Phillies are my team, always and forever, winning or losing!

3) Budweiser is the “official beer of major league baseball.” I rarely drink beer, I mean, I rarely drink, but if I were offered a beer, I would not turn it away!

4) Every season, more than a million Vienna Beef Hot Dogs are consumed by baseball fans at Chicago’s Wrigley Field. When you get a hot dog, what do you put on it?  Like beer, I don’t eat hot dogs often, but when I do, I either like chili, cheese and onions (Sonic makes a great Chili dog) or I go for all the condiments; ketchup, mustard, relish, onions!

5) The odds of a fan in the stands being hit by a baseball are 300,000 to 1. The odds of winning the lottery are (approximately) 1 in 12,000,000. Do you play the lottery? As a group we play the Powerball when the jackpot gets high.

6) Though his song has been adopted by faithful Boston Red Sox fans, Neil Diamond was born and raised in New York City. Have you ever visited The Big Apple? Several times, Tara (my teen) and I took a day trip last June. I want to go back soon, on a COOL fall day!

7) Baseball players are notoriously superstitious. For example, the Cubs’ Matt Garza eats Popeye’s fried chicken every day that he pitches. Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio touched second base with his foot every time he ran on or off the field. Do you have any superstitions? Not really! Tara does not like the number 13, but I live with a black cat!
JACK002

8) A ball signed by Babe Ruth can fetch tens of thousands of dollars at auction. Have you ever asked a celebrity for his/her autograph? Not any huge celebrities. I did email Joe Bonsall of the Oak Ridge Boys last year and asked if the five members could sign a book my mother has for her when she attended their concert! She got to go to their bus and they all signed it for her! Tara has MANY autographs of her favorite bands. These are not huge bands, but very popular in the genre she listens too

9) Baseball means summer and summer means sun. Are you working on a tan, or do you slather on the sunscreen?  I used to tan. Tanning beds and the real sun. We had a pool when we lived in Florida. Now, not so much. I wear sunscreen on my face every day, and honestly most days I really don’t have that much skin exposed! We sell SOOO much sunscreen during the summer at Walgreens!

Now back to our regularly schedule programming – Saturday Nine and Six Word Saturday

Since my previous post from the wee dark hours of the more was way more serious that I usually get, I didn’t want anyone to worry, so I went out and found me two new (to me) Saturday memes’ to participate in!

Still waiting on the snow, but the local new is telling me (yep, just me) that we could be getting from 8″-14″.  It has started snowing to the south of us.  I guess the radar on weather.com was showing stuff that wasn’t making it to the ground!

Saturday 9: White Christmas

Click on the button and you can play along too.  This meme is hosted by Crazy Sam @ Saturday 9.

 1. If you live where you get winter weather, do you prefer your Christmas to be white? If you never see snow, do you wish for it?  After living in FL for six winters, but now living back in PA, we do get winter weather, and today we are getting an early “winter” storm.  A big storm, very unusual these days for this area.  I am excited that although it might not snow on Christmas that we will have snow on the ground.  We are anticipating 14-18 inches, it’s started a bit south of us… so we should be seeing it soon!

2. How many holiday cards did you receive from people you hadn’t sent cards to, after the “mailing deadline?” Did you send a card anyway?  This year?  Ha, I haven’t sent cards.  I will probably send a New Year’s card now that we will have snow… I can take a winter picture for the card!  I’ve only received three cards so far, but there are still FOUR days of mail before Christmas, and I never did send change of address cards to many of my far away friends.

3. When the clock strikes Midnight on New Year’s, will you be at home, at a party, or somewhere else?  most likely home.  I just saw that one of the cable stations is having a Three Stooges marathon.  My daughter has never seen them, so we may be found watching some episodes of Curly, Moe and Larry!

4. Have you ever taken the keys and driven home a friend that you felt was too drunk to drive? If not, do you think you would attempt to if that situation ever arose?  Yes, I have, and yes I would.

5. Tell us about a gift that you either bought or made for someone else that you wanted for yourself!  That requires me remembering gifts I have given. I gave my daughter a Nintendo DS Lite the other year, and I really liked it.  I got her hand me down bigger clunkier Nintendo DS.

6. What chores do you have left for the holidays?  Some baking, wrapping, a little more decorating, and of course cleaning.

7. If you could buy one gift for yourself where money was not an obstacle, what would it be?  Another DSLR camera.  If money were not object, I am not sure which that would be.  Maybe I should say camera lenses.  Within reason, I would upgrade a bit to the Canon XTi and some awesome glass to go with it!

8. What is one of your family’s favorite holiday traditions?  Watching holiday movies (Lifetime, kids movies, comedies, old movies, etc) during December.  Going to a movie on Christmas Day.

9. If you could give a fellow blogger a holiday gift, which would it be and what would you give them?  Oh my, that’s not fair, I can’t pick just one.  Really, I can’t.

Let it snow, let it snow!

A cup of coffee shared with a friend is happiness!

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood….

and I haven’t gone any further than Dunkin Donuts for a cup of coffee. Not highly motivated to get out and about since our plans to meet up with old friends fell through due to my friend’s sinus infection and her feeling crappy!

I cooked a nice breakfast casserole, I’ve done two loads of laundry, scooped a litter box, cleaned a guinea pig cage, straighted my room, scanned some old newspaper documents, and posted some stuff to my blogs. I also sat out on the patio and read a little bit of a new book, and while Princess wanted to lay in the sun. I really could sit out there all day (i.e. nap) if I had a lounge chair or hammock!

Now I am ready to take a little ride.. maybe to a nearby farm to see what produce they have and visit the animals. Nothing like the smell of “farm”, it’s nice an breezy and not humid… that’s a good day to visit.

I posted about our day in Lancaster County – HERE, and some additional photos HERE.

Maybe we will have a movie night tonight. Tara and I have not really watched a movie together since we moved. We seem to spend little time together in the living room, but go to our separate rooms on our computers, etc.

I thought I would play along with the Saturday 9 too.

Saturday 9: Heatwave

1. It’s July. How has the weather been where you are? Since moving home to PA from FL in June, the weather has been AWESOME. We have use the AC only one day. Today is in the low 80s, breezy and low humidity. It doesn’t get much better.

2. What is the best way for you to beat the heat? In FL, I loved to float in our pool, now since I don’t do public pools, if it were really hot and I wanted to get out, we would take in a movie!

3. “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.” Do you buy that? Humidity really makes things worse I think, but hot is still hot. I don’t care if it is dry heat in the desert, 114 is still 114, and too hot for me!

4. Do you like hot tubs or saunas? I like them both.. but haven’t been in either in some time.

5. What’s the hottest you’ve ever been? Hmmm, I’m guessing around 100. Strange thing about FL, it was hot and humid, but rarely broke 100.

6. How many times do you hit the beach in the summer? In FL we hit the beach frequently but not in the summer much, early spring was much nicer. We will probably go “down the shore” to Ocean City NJ, once this summer.

7. When you were a kid, what did you do in the summer? We camped a lot. Most weekends, and usually 3 weeks of vacation.

8. Surfing. Have you ever gotten on a surfboard? Body surf? No and No

9. What’s your favorite summer song? Summer, anything Beach Boys!

*********************************************************************************
and how about the Photo Scavenger Hunt?

This week’s theme – ROCKS.
How about a mother and baby sea lion on some ROCKS at Sea World, Orlando

************************************************************************************
So what are YOU up to this weekend? I need to think of something for tomorrow, especially if the weather is this beautiful… hmmm Valley Forge Park perhaps? Stay tuned.
